Time to sell....
Chairman Powell of the FCC plans to reclassify the Internet as a regulated
utility on Feb 26th. The chairman has confirmed in a house hearing today
that USF fees WILL apply to Internet service. The current USF collection
rate is 16.8% and adjusts automatically depending on how much money the
government spends. If the FCC does this everyone's bill is going up by at
least 16.8%. Be on the lookout as we may need your help again supporting
our cause in DC against these types of actions!
* Unless we REALLY make some noise, we are probably being reclassified as
a utility (title II). Yuk
* Folks screaming on the radio tonight (talk radio) - internet bills go
up by 16.8%.
Comments? How do we break this to our customers? When will it take
effect? How do we stop it?
Can we stop it? How will you answer customer questions about this?

OK FINE! Let it happen. Tax every MoFo internet service out there to be fair. Then take all your new tax money and split it evenly to ALL OF US! Yep not going to happen either. I guess it's time to hire Steve Coran to beat them for my share!

I was at the hearing today. Commissioner Powell is a former FCC Commissioner (he served on the FCC when Clinton was President) and now is the lobbyist for CTIA. He is neither the Chairman, nor does he work for the FCC.

Whoever made the post regarding Powell’s position misunderstood him. Powell actually said that IF Title II is applied to Internet providers, it will destroy innovation and hurt small businesses. He is in favor of the Thune/Upton bill, as is WISPA.

Powell also said that the Internet should NOT be regulated like a utility. Whoever made the post about Mr. Powell’s comments took them out of context. CTIA is working with WISPA to ensure that any net neutrality legislation protects the right of Internet providers to manage their networks. As with WISPA, neither CTIA nor Mr. Powell believe Title II should apply to Internet providers. Mr. Powell was making clear the horrible things that would happen if it were, he was not recommending this course.

If you are interested in reading his actual testimony (rather than a summary), along with that of the other witnesses who testified today, please go to the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee website: http://energycommerce.house.gov/hearing/protecting-the-internet-and-consumers-through-congressional-action

Glad you did. I saw it eating lunch on my phone. Then my gf called me and heard talk radio talking about it.
If they're talking about it (it was a local show based in Bham AL) it's starting to spread....

FYI, my post originated from Shelby BB. I know Chuck is always on top of things so we reposted it.

I’m kind of liking the Thune-Upton bill. No doubt it will get modified into a piece of crap before anyone gets to vote on it.

One question – why would the percentage rate go up? With a wider contribution base, wouldn’t the rate go down to produce the same amount?

Looks like i've confirmed most the points of this post:

* Unless we REALLY make some noise, we are probably being reclassified as a utility (title II). Yuk
* Folks screaming on the radio tonight (talk radio) - internet bills go up by 16.8%.

Comments? How do we break this to our customers? When will it take effect? How do we stop it?
Can we stop it? How will you answer customer questions about this?
